- This test method describes how to measure the cross-link density and cross-link points of UHMWPE cross-linked by ionizing radiation or chemical methods by measuring the swelling degree of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (hereinafter referred to as UHMWPE) samples immersed in o-xylene. The molecular weight and number of repeating units are determined. This standard describes examples of test techniques and methods used in the above determinations. This test method is used to measure the change in height of a UHMWPE sample when immersed in o-xylene solvent. Volumetric swelling measurements assume that the sample is isotropically cross-linked and that dimensional changes are consistent in all directions. This testing method avoids uncertainties that may result from solvent evaporation or temperature changes. This standard does not attempt to address all safety issues covered, even those relevant to its use. It is the responsibility of the users of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to clarify the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to application.
