This standard specifies the method for the determination of acrylonitrile monomer in foods and food simulants. This standard applies to aqueous food simulants, fatty food simulants olive oil, other fatty food simulants, simulants D (such as synthetic triglyceride mixtures, sunflower oil and corn oil) and liquid and solid foods (such as drinks and soft butter). The content of acrylonitrile monomer in this standard is expressed as the number of milligrams of acrylonitrile per kilogram of food or food simulant. According to the applied testing conditions (see note in 8.2.3), this standard is applicable to the quantitative determination of acrylonitrile monomer content in food simulants with a minimum content of 0.005 mg/kg to 0.010 mg/kg or lower. For the determination of acrylonitrile monomer in the mentioned foods, the lower limit of determination can generally be reached at 0.020 mg/kg. Note: This standard is applicable to the detection of acrylonitrile in 15% (volume fraction) alcohol solution, and also applies to 10% (volume fraction) alcohol solution.
