Scope: This part of GB/T 21838 specifies the instrumented indentation test method for the hardness and material parameters of metallic and non-metallic coatings. It is especially suitable for thin coatings in the nano/micro range. When the indentation test is carried out on the surface of the specimen, the method is limited to a single covering layer, but it can also be used on its cross-section if the thickness of each layer is large enough or the gradient is small enough relative to the size of the indentation. Measure the properties of gradient and multi-layer overlay materials. This standard does not limit the type of material, it applies to metallic, non-metallic and organic coatings. This standard can be used for hardness measurements only when using pyramidal or conical indenters with a tip radius of curvature sufficiently small to cause plastic deformation of the coating. For viscoelastic or creep-prone materials, the test time has a great influence on the hardness measurement.
