Scope
This standard specifies that under the test conditions, the test material is exposed to an aqueous culture solution prepared by activated sludge, compost or soil, and the oxygen consumption of the material, including plastics containing additives, is determined by measuring the amount of oxygen consumed in a closed respirometer. Aerobic biodegradability method. If activated sludge without proper treatment is used as the inoculum, this test only simulates the biodegradation process in a natural aqueous environment; if a mixed or pre-exposed inoculum is used, this method can be used to determine the potential of the test material. biodegradability. The test conditions adopted in this standard are not necessarily the best conditions for producing maximum biodegradability, but this standard is designed to determine the potential biodegradability of materials or to indicate the biodegradability of materials in natural environments. The accuracy of biodegradability assessment can be improved by calculating the carbon balance (for optional items, see Appendix E). This method is applicable to the following materials: - natural and (or) synthetic polymers, copolymers or their mixtures; - plastic materials containing additives such as plasticizers, pigments or other compounds; - water-soluble polymers; - Under the test conditions, the material will not produce an inhibitory effect on the microorganisms in the inoculum, and the inhibitory effect can be measured by the application of inhibition control or other appropriate methods. If the test material has an inhibitory effect on the inoculum, other inoculum or pre-exposed inoculum may be used at a lower test concentration.
