Scope: This specification is a part of the VXI bus specification, which specifies the network instrument protocol, which can be used for communication between controllers and devices based on TCP/IP networks. The only networks directly mentioned in this specification are those that support the Internet Protocol Suite. The techniques defined in this specification can be used on other networks (such as those supporting the OSI protocol standard), but this document does not describe the relevant transformations. This specification uses the Open Network Computing (ONC) remote procedure call (RPC) on the upper layer of the Internet protocol suite. The ONC/RPC protocol is only used as a protocol specification on the network and does not specify a specific application interface. The network instrument host may also support other network protocols.
