Scope
This standard specifies a method for sampling particles generated from total joint prostheses implanted in the human body or from joint wear testing machines. The standard also specifies methods for isolating polymer and metal particles, as well as instruments, reagents and test methods for characterizing and quantifying these particles, which are derived from periprosthetic tissue removed during revision surgery or autopsy, or from joint wear testing machines. liquid test medium. The method specified in this standard does not quantitatively classify the wear of joint prostheses, nor does it determine the amount of wear on the specific joint surface. This standard does not cover the biological effects of particles, nor does it provide methods for evaluating the biosafety of particles. The methods listed in this standard are not suitable for measuring polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) particles.
