This European Standard describes a method for the determination of ash, in the range between 0.01 and 0.20% (ml), in distillates and residual fuel oils, crude oils, lubricating oils, waxes and other products oil industries in which any ash-producing substance is considered an impurity or contamination (note 1). The method is limited to petroleum products free from additives that form ash, such as, in particular, certain phosphoric compounds (note 2). Note 1 — For certain types of samples, all metal compounds capable of forming ash may not be quantitatively calculated in the test result. This is particularly true for distillates, for which a special method must be used if metal compounds are to be dosed quantitatively. Note 2 — This method is not intended for the analysis of pure lubricating oils containing additives. For such samples, use the national standard1> corresponding to document CEN 19/U 11-1971 "Method for determination of sulphated ash in lubricating oils and additives"; it is not intended even for the analysis of lubricating oils containing lead, nor for used engine oils.
