This standard refers to liquid magnetic compasses intended for maritime navigation, having a direct reading system and which can also be of the reflection, projection or transmission type. In the following text, a magnetic compass means an instrument composed of a magnetic equipment supported by a single suspension tip inside a mortar completely filled with liquid and mounted on a gimbal suspension. The standard also refers to hemispherical compasses that are not mounted on a cardan shaft; the requirements relating to gimbal suspension established by this standard therefore do not apply to said compasses. This standard excludes dry compasses and types of compass based on principles other than those indicated.
