This standard applies to sintered metallic materials, with the exception of sintered metal carbides, whether they have been heat treated after sintering or not, and also to materials which have been recompressed or calibrated after sintering. The method is applicable only to materials having a uniform hardness along the cross section and a negligible ductility, i.e. a ductility corresponding to a permanent deflection less than approximately 0.3 mm, detectable during the application of the load on the appropriate tool. 2 If the method is applied to materials showing significant plastic deformation before failure, the results obtained may be erroneous. In this case the tensile strength method referred to in UNI 556 must be used.
