Scope
This British Standard specifies requirements for covered electrodes for the manual metal-arc welding of mild steel and medium-tensile steel having a tensile strength of not more than 65 hbar* (42 tonf/in2) with a sulphur and phosphorus content of not greater than 0·06% each. The electrodes shall be capable of complying in all respects with the appropriate requirements and tests in this standard. Section 1 specifies general requirements for all types of covered electrodes. Section 2 specifies requirements, additional to Section 1, for all classes of normal penetration electrodes for use in one or more welding positions, including hydrogen controlled electrodes not covered by Section 4. Section 3 specifies requirements additional to Section 1 for electrodes of the deep penetration type for welding close square butt joints in the flat position and for fillet welds in the flat and horizontal-vertical positions. Compliance with the requirements of Section 3 indicates that the electrodes may be used satisfactorily for the practice of deep penetration welding. If the electrodes are also to be used as normal penetration electrodes, they shall also be subjected to the tests prescribed in Section 2. Section 4 specifies requirements, additional to Section 1, for hydrogen controlled electrodes which give on all-weld metal tests a tensile strength of not less than 50 hbar* (32 tonf/in2) andayield stress of not less than 35 hbar* (23 tonf/in2).
