Scope
This standard applies to linear or logarithmic analogue ratemeters used in nuclear instrumentation to measure random pulse counting r?tes in a range from about 0.1 to about 106c- sec~ ', as produced by detectors such as counter tubes or fission ionization chambers. Such an instrument comprises essentially the counting ratemeter itself and its own auxiliary circuits. A ratemeter is considered as an operational functional unit characterized mainly by its output. Associated with a radiation detector and appropriate interfacing units, it permits the measure-ment of the counting r?te. The counting ratemeter itself accepts defined digital pulses and gives information by means of an indicating meter or by the magnitude of its output. It may actuate equipment connected at its output. The instrument may, for example, participate in the control and safe operation of nuclear reactors (during shut-down, during start-up, fuel charging and discharging, periods of power increase from low power to rated power, etc). It is deemed that the scope of this standard should be as general as possible, and it therefore gives neither a list of qualification, type or acceptance tests, nor numerical values for the various characteristics specified. On these points, it will be necessary to complete the specification accord-ing to the needs of the specific applications (e.g. reactor instrumentation, health physics, laboratory measurement, etc).
