This standard provides rules for the ultrasonic inspection of heavy steel forgings. The forgings can be regarded as heavy vvhen the section thickness exoeeds 50 mm. Hovvever this standard may also, where suitable, be applied to smaller forgings.
Because of the differences in surface condition, shape, grain structure and intended application of forgings it is very difficult to give instructions for the inspection procedure and basis of assessment suitable for ali forgings. Nevertheless, the inspection shall provide assurance with regard to the durability of the forging under the different operating conditions, vvhilst at the same time aiming at an economic inspection procedure.
