Scope
1.1 This standard recommendation relates to electrically operated traffic signals for the control of road traffic and pedestrians. The types of traffic signal installations covered are those used for— (a) The control of intersections and pedestrian crossing places; (b) The control of one lane sections of roadway; (c) The control of lane usage; (d) The compulsory interruption of the traffic stream at other than intersections. 1.2 Railway crossing stop signals (alternating red flashing lights) are installed and controlled by the New Zealand Government Railways and do not come within the scope of this standard recommendation. However, when road traffic signals are to be installed at a location where the operation of the railway service is likely to be affected, the railway crossing signals and the traffic signals should be linked and the combined system must be approved by both the New Zealand Government Railways and the road controlling authority. 1.3 This standard recommendation does not relate to the use of any signal mounted on a motor vehicle.
