This European standard specifies the dimensions, dimensional tolerances, mechanical, physical and chemical characteris ics, surface appearance specifications and marking of ceramic tiles and slabs. The standard is only applicable to stretched ceramic tiles and slabs with water absorption 3% < E ^ 6% according to the Alia group of standard EN 87 intended for floor and wall coverings indoors and 1 exterior of buildings. The standard only applies to premium stretched tiles and slabs. The standard is divided into two parts. The majority of ceramic tiles and slabs from the Alia group are covered by this part of the standard (Part 1). Certain particular products, which are manufactured under different names (terracotta in France and Belgium, cotto in Italy and Catalan canopy in Spain) have different characteris ics, for example resis ance to bending, surface hardness and resis ance to 1' deep abrasion of unglazed tiles. These products are covered by Part 2 of this standard in which different specifications are defined.
