Scope
1.1 This standard covers procedures for testing adhesive tapes intended for use as electrical insulators. They are classified as follows: Class l-Non-elastic bases, such as: ——smooth and corrugated paper, - fabric with or without coating, - ester cellulose films. "Cellulose ester films", - tereptatal polyethylene films. "Polychlylene terephthalate films", - films of fluorocarbon polymers, and combinations of these. Class 2.-Elastoplastic bases that are characterized by both their high elasticity and their substantial recovery, such as: ——vinyl chloride and copolymers, - vinylidene chloride and copolymers, - polyethylene. 1.2 The procedures appear in the following order: Sections Sample Selection............................... 2 Conditioning...... ........................... 3 Length of tape in a roll............... .,. 4 Thickness................................................. 5 Breaking stress and elongation ................ 6 Dielectric strength .............................. 7 Adhesive strength.................................... 8 Penetration resis ance at elevated temperatures 9 Strength method for indirect measurement of electrolytic corrosion ..................... 10 Adhesive bond separation force ........ 11 Shear stress after solvent immersion 12 Flagging ........................................... 13 Oil resis ance .. ............................ 14 Accelerated aging (high temperature tape)................... ................. 16 Unwinding force ........................... 17 Flammability . .................................... 18 Notes unless otherwis specified in the test method included. individual, these procedures apply to class 1 and class 2 tapes.
