The standard applies to the determination of the sulfur content in petroleum products, such as doped lubricating oils, doping concentrates and lubricating greases. The method is applicable to any product that contains at least 0.1% (w/w) sulfur and is so volatile that it can be weighed in an open crucible. The method is not applicable to samples containing elements that interfere with the sulphate determination by forming a precipitate insoluble in dilute hydrochloric acid, other than barium sulphate. Interfering elements include iron, aluminum, calcium, silicon and lead. Other acid-insoluble substances that interfere are silicate, molybdenum dis lfide, asbestos, mica, etc.
