This standard establis es names and symbols for quantities for the design and calculation of building structures. The standard also provides rules for choosing letters for the formation of symbols, for those cases not provided for in the standard. The standard relates to commonly used symbols and names for quantities that are necessary for this area of application and does not provide symbols and names that only apply to a certain material (e.g. concrete, wood, steel) or to a certain specialty (e.g. foundations). This standard must also be used in standards, regulations and professional literature. To a lesser extent, the standard anticipates future developments in the field of safety theories or new techniques, for example in the field of computer-aided design and calculation of building structures.
