The standard applies to drinking water and water with a similar composition. The water must not contain any other base-consuming components besides carbon dioxide. The presence of organic base-consuming components is negligible if the water contains less than 0.5 mmol/l (6 mg/l) organic carbon (compare NEN 6522). The appendix contains a method for making a correction if the organic carbon content exceeds this value. Calcium and iron can interfere. The size of the dis urbance depends on the hydrogen carbonate content and on the presence of complexing agents. The carbon dioxide content may be not less than 0.023 mmol/l (1 mg/l) and not more than 23 mmol/l (1000 mg/l).
