Scope
This standard describes a method for the gravimetric determination of a silicon content of at least 0.05% (w/w) and is applicable to the chemical examination of iron, non-alloyed and alloyed steel. The method is not applicable in the presence of tantalum or niobic. If a lot of chromium is present, dehydrated chromium sulphates are formed when fumigating with sulfuric acid, which are difficult to dis olve; in such cases the perchloric acid method should be used. In the presence of tungsten, the annealing of the precipitate must be carried out in a slightly modified manner, see 6.2.3.2.
