The standard applies to the detection and identification of the following antioxidants in vegetable and animal oils and fats:
——nordihydroguajaretic acid (NDGA);
——propyl gallate (PG);
——octyl gallate (OG);
——dodecyl gallate (DG);
——tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ);
——butylhydroxyanis le (tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol) (BHA);
——a-tocopherol;
——butylhydroxytoluene (2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol) (BHT). Notes 1. The antioxidants are lis ed in order of their Rf values. 2. Detection of α-tocopherol is sometimes difficult as the thin layer chromatographic spots of this antioxidant are generally diffuse in nature. 3. BHT is not completely separated from α-tocopherol using this method. The method has detection limits of 20 mg/kg for BHT and 10 mg/kg for the other antioxidants.
