Scope
The purpose of this standard is to describe a method for determining the kinematic vis osity of transparent or opaque liquid petroleum products by measuring the flow time of a determined volume of the liquid at a given temperature through a calibrated glass capillary under the action of gravity. It also gives a method for calculating the dynamic vis osity from the kinematic vis osity obtained by measurement. Note 1 - This standard is not applicable to the measurement of the vis osity of bitumen. Note 2 - It applies to Newtonian liquids, that is to say liquids for which the shear tension is proportional to the speed gradient. The proportionality constant is the vis osity coefficient. In the case of liquids behaving like gels at certain temperatures (non-Newtonian liquids), measurements must be carried out at temperatures high enough to obtain free flow so that the results are similar to those obtained in capillary vis ometers of different diameter.
