Scope
This European Standard describes a method for the determination of ash in the range 0.01 to 0.20 % (m/m) in dis illates and residual fuel oils, crude oils, lubricating oils, waxes and other products oil tankers in which any ash-producing material is considered an impurity or contamination (Note 1). The method is limited to petroleum products free of ash-forming additives, such as in particular certain phosphorous compounds (Note 2). NOTE 1: For certain sample types, all metal compounds likely to form ash may not be counted quantitatively in the test result. This is particularly true for dis illates for which it is necessary to use a special method if one wants to quantitatively determine the metal compounds. NOTE 2 This method is not intended for the analysis of new lubricating oils containing additives; for such samples, use the national standard corresponding to document CEN 1 9/U 11-1971 Method for the determination of sulfated ash in lubricating oils and additives; it is also not intended for the analysis of lubricating oils containing lead or for used engine oils.
