1.1 This European standard describes a method for the determination of basic constituents in petroleum products by potentiometric titration with perchloric acid in glacial acetic acid. 1.2. For many products the results obtained by this method will be similar to those obtained with the EN X standard "Determination of the neutralization index by potentiometric titration" (*). With products containing certain compounds such as certain very basic hearing oils and certain polymerized nitrogen compounds superior results can be obtained. 1.3. Constituents that may be considered to have basic properties include organic and inorganic bases, amino compounds, salts of weak organic acids, soaps, basic salts or polyacid bases, and salts of heavy metals.
