1.1 This standard prescribes gas chromatographic (GLG) and spectrophotometric methods for the determination of malathion [ S - ( 1, 2-dicarbethoxyethyl )-0, O-dimethyl dithiophosphate ] residues in foods.
1.1.1 Spectrophotometric method may be adopted as a limit test for routine purposes and is generally applicable at a detection level of 0·2 υg/g (0·2 ppm ), whereas gas chromatographic method shall be the referee method with a minimum detection limit of 0·05 ug/g (0·05 ppm).
1.1.2 Though no set procedure for thin layer chromatography ( TLC ) has been prescribed, any standardized thin layer chromatography procedure may be followed, if necessary, for the purpose of clean up, identification and confirmation of malathion residues.
