1.1 This standard covers contactors intended for making and breaking electric circuits, and, if combined with suitable relays, for the protection of these circuits against overloads which may occur therein.
1.2 It applies only to contactors for non-exposed installations, the main circuit of which are intended to be connected to circuits, the rated voltage of which exceeds 1 000 volts ac but does not exceed 11 000 volts ac between lines.
1.3 The contactors used on merchant ships shall also comply with any supplementary requirements.
1.4 The special requirements for contactors intended for use in railways, road vehicles or in aircraft are not covered in this standard.
1.5 The service conditions for which the contactors conforming to this specification are suitable, are given in Appendix A.
Note 1 — A contactor forming part of a controlgear assembly is subject to the require-ments of IS: 3427-1969*, in matters not covered by this standard.
Note 2 — Contactors which are intended to provide short circuit protection shall additionally satisfy the relevant conditions specified for circuit breakers in IS: 2516 (Part I/Sec 2 )-1963t.
Note 3 — As regards fuse contactor combinations, additional recommendations are under consideration.
