Scope
1.1 This Recommendation applies to portable assemblies intended to measure exposure rate due to X or gamma radiation of energy between 50 keV and 3 MeV for the purposes of radiation protec-tion, and which comprise at least : — a detector sub-assembly, (e.g., ionization chamber, G.M. counter tube, scintillation detector, etc.), - a measuring sub-assembly, which may be connected together either rigidly or by means of a flexible cable, or incorporated into a single assembly. 1.2 The Recommendation is applicable in its entirety to the following assemblies defined in Clause 2: — portable exposure rate meters; - portable exposure rate monitors. 1.3 The Recommendation is also applicable to portable exposure rate measuring assemblies designed for special applications (e.g., very high exposure rates). However, some of the specifications may need to be amended or supplemented according to the particular characteristics applicable to such assemblies. 1.4 If an assembly has been designed to carry out combined functions, it shall comply with the require-ments pertaining to each of these functions. If it has been designed to perform only one function, but is also capable of carrying out other functions, then it need comply only with the requirements for the first function. It would be desirable, however, for the assembly to meet the requirements pertaining to the other functions. 1.5 The requirements given below pertain to assemblies as defined in Sub-clause 1.1, and which are cur-rently being manufactured. It is possible however, to use assemblies which do not meet the require-ments set out below when such requirements are not deemed essential for a given purpose. In such cases, the requirements to be applied to the assemblies shall be specified by agreement between the manufacturer and the user, but the determination of the characteristics of the assemblies shall conform to the methods given in the present recommendations. 1.6 The Recommendation is not applicable to the operating characteristics of the functional units or sub-assemblies for the display of information (e.g. indicating meters, recorders, alarms). The characteristics of such instruments shall be in conformity with the general specifications appropriate to them. 1.7 This Recommendation specifies, for the above described assemblies, general characteristics, general test procedures, radiation characteristics, electrical, mechanical, safety and environmental characteristics, and also the identification certificate.
