Scope: 1.1 This standard specifies thermogravimetric methods for the determination of total organic components, carbon black and ash in vulcanized and unvulcanized rubber. The amount of mass loss up to around 300°C is a rough indicator of the volatile content of the compound. 1.2 This method applies to unvulcanized rubber compounds and vulcanized rubbers using the following rubbers, either singly or in combination: This method does not apply to unvulcanized rubber compounds and vulcanized rubbers listed in 1.3-1.5 below. 1.3 Rubber and rubber compounds that produce carbonaceous residues during pyrolysis. 1.4 Rubber formulations containing additives that produce carbonaceous residues during pyrolysis. 1.5 Rubber compounds containing inorganic fillers that decompose in the temperature range 25-650 °C. 1.6 The determination of total rubber cannot be applied to unvulcanized rubber compounds or vulcanized rubbers where the non-rubber organic components cannot be completely removed by solvent extraction as specified by JIS K 6229.
