Scope
This standard specifies entity authentication mechanisms using cryptographic verification functions. Two of these mechanisms are related to unilateral authentication, while the remaining mechanisms are related to mutual authentication between two entities. The mechanisms specified in this standard use time-varying parameters, such as timestamps, sequence numbers, or random numbers, to prevent legitimate authentication information from being accepted outside of its validity period. Unilateral authentication if timestamps or sequence numbers are used in the authentication process
