Scope

This standard specifies a method for estimating the primary and secondary free alcohol content of essential oils by acetylation in pyridine. In this method, the primary and secondary alcohols contained in the essential oil can be completely acetylated. Phenols, anthrarilates and aldehydes can be fully or partially acetylated. Tertiary alcohols are acetylated only to a negligible extent.
