This standard specifies the method of measuring the actual output speed of a copier or the effective copying rate that produces a copier. This standard applies to plain paper copiers equipped with automatic document feeders or corresponding processing capabilities, and applies to the single-sided and double-sided copying methods of these machines. This standard applies specifically to non-digital copiers (usually analog machines using optical lenses). This standard allows comparisons of the effective copying rates produced by copiers operating in various duplex modes of operation. When using the automatic document feed, sort and/or collate copies feature, most copiers will output double-sided copies at a rate different from the nominal speed 1). People often use double-sided copying (1:2, 2:1, 2:2). In these modes, the effective copying speed is usually significantly reduced. As a rule of thumb, the degree to which the effective copy rate is reduced depends largely on the type of copier document processor. A document processor with pre-collation will produce significantly different effective copy rates than a document processor with post-collation. The so-called pre-sorting is a method in which the originals are fed into the platen sequentially in the order of sorting, and a copy is made for each page. The so-called post-sorting is a method of copying the previous page of originals according to the required total number of pages before the next page of originals enters the platen in order to prepare for copying. In addition, the effective copying rate of a copier is influenced by job-related parameters, most notably the number of originals to be copied in a set and the length of the run or number of sets to be copied. Existing standards, including the tests currently commonly used to test and record the effective copy rate of copiers, do not adequately account for these important parameters of the machine and the task. This standard provides a general measure of the actual output speed or effective copy rate for the above-mentioned double-sided copying method, and allows manufacturers and purchasers of copiers to describe and compare the effective copy rate of various copiers with this feature.
