Scope
The test methods described in this standard are capable of providing preliminary differences in the resistance of insulating materials of the same type to damage occurring in close proximity to the surface when they are exposed to high voltage, low current arc discharges. Arcing causes local thermal and chemical decomposition and corrosion and eventually forms conductive paths in insulating materials. The severity of the test conditions is gradually increased: in the first few stages, the low-current arc discharge is repeatedly interrupted, and in the later stages, the arc current additive is increased. Because this test method is easy to operate and the time required for the test is short, it is suitable for preliminary screening of materials, checking the influence of material component changes and quality control testing. Past experience with this test method has shown that the reproducibility of test results for thermoset materials is acceptable. For thermoplastic materials, some laboratory reports show that the test results have unacceptably large deviations, which makes this recommended method not applicable to the test of thermoplastic materials. In general, it is not permissible to draw conclusions about the relative arc resistance ratings of some materials based on this test method alone, since these materials may be subject to other types of arc action. The relative arc resistance ratings of materials may be different from those obtained from wet tracking resistance tests (such as IEC60112, IEC60587 and IEC61302), and also different from the working conditions of materials in actual use, because in these situations, materials are subjected to arc The intensity, repetition frequency and time of the discharge vary greatly.
