Scope
1.1 This standard specifies the method for determining the aromatic hydrogen content (steps A and B) and aromatic carbon content (step C) in oil products using high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Applicable samples include kerosene, heavy distilled oil, mineral oil, lubricating oil, liquids derived from coal, and other fractions that are completely soluble in chloroform at room temperature. For pulsed Fourier transform spectrometers, the lower detection limit is generally 0.1% (mole fraction) of aromatic hydrogen atoms and 0.5% (mole fraction) of aromatic carbon atoms. For continuous wave spectrometers, it is only suitable for measuring aromatic hydrogen atoms, and the detection limit is relatively high, generally 0.5% (mole fraction) of aromatic hydrogen atoms. 1.2 The reporting unit is the mole fraction of aromatic hydrogen atoms and the mole fraction of aromatic carbon atoms. 1.3 This standard does not apply to samples containing more than 1% (mass fraction) of olefins or phenolic compounds. 1.4 This standard does not cover the determination of the mass fraction of aromatic hydrocarbons in oils because the NMR signals from aliphatic substituents on saturated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbon molecules appear in the same chemical shift region. To determine the mass and volume content of aromatic hydrocarbons in oil, chromatography or mass spectrometry can be used. 1.5 This standard uses SI (International System of Units) units. 1.6 This standard does not make recommendations on all safety issues involved. Users of this standard should establish appropriate safety precautions and formulate appropriate rules and regulations before use.
