Scope: This standard specifies the method for determining the total carbon and sulfur content in iron and steel by infrared absorption method after combustion in a high-frequency induction furnace. The method is suitable for the determination of carbon content of 0.005% to 4.3% and sulfur content of 0.0005% to 0.33%. This method can be applied to routine production control analysis and meets the requirements of recognized laboratory accreditation bodies for analytical methods. This method is widely accepted and good laboratory analysis method. This standard uses calibrated commercial instruments, and the calibration is verified with certified reference materials for steel, while the instrument performance is controlled by conventional statistical process control methods (SPC). This method can adopt a single element determination method, that is, determine carbon or sulfur alone; or adopt a simultaneous determination method, that is, measure carbon and sulfur at the same time.
