- Scope
- This standard specifies the evaluation method of HIC caused by hydrogen absorption due to corrosion of pipeline steel and pressure vessel steel plate in a corrosive environment containing sulfide aqueous solution. This test includes special procedures or requirements for testing small diameter (nominal fitting size [NPS] 2 to 6), thin wall (6 mm wall thickness), electric resistance welded (ERW) and seamless line pipe. Unless otherwise specified in this standard, these small-diameter, thin-walled materials shall be tested in the same manner as other piping pipes. The test method is to expose the unstressed sample to any one of the following two standard test solutions, solution A, at normal temperature and pressure, containing saturated H2S sodium chloride acetic acid solution (NaCl, CH3COOH); or solution B, under normal temperature and pressure, artificial seawater containing saturated H2S. After the specified time of exposure, the specimens were removed and evaluated. This test method does not simulate service conditions. This method is only intended to provide a reproducible test environment in order to be able to distinguish the sensitivity of different steel samples to HIC in a relatively short period of time. This standard does not contain acceptance or rejection criteria. Test methods used to determine acceptance or rejection, comparison of different steels, selection of steels, or other purposes are outside the scope of this standard.
