This standard specifies the anodic dissolution coulometric method for measuring the thickness of metallic coatings. This method applies only to conductive overlays. Table 1 lists typical metal coating and substrate combinations that can be determined by this standard. When other combinations are used, they can be tested using common electrolytes (see Appendix A), or they can be tested with new electrolytes developed for these combinations, however, in both cases it is necessary to verify suitability for the overall overlay system . This standard also applies to the measurement of multilayer systems, such as Cu-Ni-Cr (see 8.5). This standard can be used to measure the thickness of the alloy layer obtained by different methods if the characteristics of the alloy layer application are considered. In some cases, this standard can also be used to detect the presence and thickness of the diffusion layer. The coating thickness of cylindrical and linear specimens can also be measured (see 8.7).
