Scope
This standard applies to indoor-installed AC contactors and/or contactor-based motor starters used in power systems with a rated voltage of 3.6 kV and above but not exceeding 12 kV, and a frequency of 50 Hz and below. This standard applies only to three-pole contactors and starters in three-phase systems, and to single-pole contactors and starters in single-phase systems. Two-pole contactors and starters used in single-phase systems should be negotiated between the manufacturer and the user. The contactors and/or starters covered by this standard are generally not intended for breaking short-circuit currents, therefore, suitable short-circuit protection (see 3.4.110.12 and Note 2 below) may be part of the device but not necessarily a contactor or starter a part of. This standard provides requirements for the following devices: - contactors associated with overload and/or short-circuit protective devices (SCPD); - contactors associated with separate short-circuit protective devices and/or single short-circuit and overload protective devices integrated starters; - contactors or starters combined with their own short-circuit protective devices according to the specified conditions. These combination appliances, such as combined starters (see 3.4.110.9), are considered as a whole. This standard deals with contactors for closing and opening circuits and, if combined with suitable relays (see 3.6.108), contactors for protection against possible circuit overloads. This standard also applies to the operating device of the contactor and its auxiliary equipment. This standard covers motor starters used to start a motor and accelerate it to normal speed, to ensure continuous operation of the motor, to cut off the power supply to the motor, and to protect the motor and its connected circuits against overload. Types of motor starters include: - Direct starters - Reversing starters - Two-way starters - Reduced voltage starters - Auto-decompression starters - Rheostat starters - Reactance starters Action depends on Thermal relays used to protect motors in compliance with GB/T 14598.15, or starters equipped with thermal protection devices for motors in compliance with GB 13232 do not need to meet the relevant requirements of this standard.
