JIS B 8008-3:2000 Reciprocating internal combustion engines -- Exhaust emission measurement -- Part 3: Definitions and methods of measurement of exhaust gas smoke under steady-state conditions
This standard details two methods for measuring the exhaust smoke characteristics of the exhaust gas of reciprocating internal combustion engines operating under steady state conditions. One method is to evaluate the opacity of smoke by measuring the brightness of the light beam, and the other method is to evaluate the soot content by measuring the degree of blackening of the filter. This is the way to do it. Alternatively, specific requirements may be detailed to apply to special bodies where necessary.
