Scope
This standard specifies coliform bacteria, thermotolerant coliforms, and putative Escherichia coli (hereinafter referred to as putative E. coli) by culturing them in a liquid medium in multiple test tubes and using the most probable number (MPN) method. Specifies the methods for detection and testing of bacteria and the method for counting the number of bacteria. This method can be applied to all samples, including those with high turbidity. Tests for the detection and confirmation of coliform bacteria, including E. coli, can be considered part of a series of tests. The extent to which confirmation tests are conducted for each sample depends on the characteristics of the sample, and should be determined according to the purpose of the test. In fact, the detection of presumptive E. coli as specified in 3.3 is usually indicative of recent fecal contamination.
