Scope
This standard specifies the detection and testing of coliform bacteria, thermotolerant coliform bacteria, and presumed Escherichia coli (hereinafter referred to as presumed E.coli) using a lactose-added medium (see ISO 7704) after filtration with a membrane filter. Specify the method and method for counting the number of bacteria. This method can be applied to all types of samples, except when the turbidity is high and filtration is difficult, or when other types of bacteria are present in large enough numbers to inhibit the growth of coliform bacteria. Appropriate tests can be selected from a range of test methods for detecting and confirming coliform bacteria, including E. coli. The extent to which each sample is tested depends on the properties of the sample and is determined based on the purpose of the test. In fact, the detection of presumptive E. coli as specified in 3.3 is usually indicative of the extent of recent fecal contamination.
