Scope
—This standard provides guidelines for the development of sampling plans, sampling techniques and handling of samples for the physical, chemical and microbiological evaluation of groundwater. This does not deal with sampling for daily operational management of groundwater used for drinking water or other purposes, but is concerned with general investigation of groundwater quality. Due to the complexity of groundwater systems, many specific sampling applications require the advice of professional hydrogeologists, which cannot be detailed in this standard. - Clarifying the purpose of groundwater sampling is a fundamental requirement before identifying the principles to be applied to a particular sampling problem. The general purposes of sampling plans usually considered for groundwater are to investigate the quality of groundwater supplies, detect and evaluate groundwater contamination, and assist in groundwater resource utilization. The principles set out in this International Standard also apply to the following more specific purposes:
