Scope
1.1 This standard is part of a standard that deals with the sampling and testing of paints, varnishes and related products. This standard specifies a test method for evaluating the resistance of a coating to peeling from the substrate when a rectangular grid pattern is cut into the coating and penetrates through the substrate. Performance measured by this test method depends on, among other factors, adhesion to either the primer or the substrate. However, this test method shall not be considered as a means of measuring adhesion. If attachment requirements are required, refer to JIS K 5600-5-7. 1.2 The test method in 1.1 is described as a pass/fail test or, if the circumstances suit, for a six-stage classification test (see 8.3). When applied to a multilayer coating system, it is possible to evaluate the peeling resistance of each individual layer. 1.3 Tests may be carried out on painted objects and/or on specially prepared test specimens. This method applies to hard (steel) and soft (wooden and gypsum) substrates, each of which requires different testing procedures (see point 7). This test method is not suitable for coatings with a coating thickness greater than 250 μm or for patterned coatings.
