1.1 This standard is the definitive standard for sampling and testing methods for coatings and related products. This standard specifies a test method for measuring the resistance to penetration of a single coating or multicoat coating system of the relevant product by scratching with a needle with a hemispherical tip under specified conditions. The needle penetrates into the material, except in multilayer coating systems, in which case the needle penetrates either the material or the intermediate layer. 1.2 This test method is applied as follows: a) a pass/fail test in which a single prescribed load is applied to the needle for evaluation according to a specific standard; b) measurement of the minimum load that will penetrate the coating by increasing the load on the needle.
