This standard specifies a general procedure for determining the kinematic viscosity of coatings and related products at shear rates ranging from 5 000 s to 20 000 s. When comparing the viscosity of each product, the shear rate should be almost the same. Unless otherwise agreed, measurements shall be made at precisely controlled temperatures of 23 ± 0.2°C. The obtained values provide information on the handling of the product during the early stages of painting, but do not provide information on the changes caused by the evaporation of the paint solvent. This method is applicable to all brush paints, whether or not the product exhibits Newtonian fluid properties. Moreover, this method is similar to the measurement according to JIS K 5600-2-5 because the fixed part spacing of the high shear viscometer is narrow. There is also better reproducibility for paints with lower numerical dispersities.
