Scope
The checksum system specified in this standard prevents errors in transcribing and typing character strings. The length of the string is either fixed or variable, including characters in the following character sets: Numeric (10 digits: 0 to 9) Alphabetic (26 letters: A to Z) Alphanumeric (letters and numbers) In a string Embedded spaces and special characters are ignored. For products that use this standard to generate checksums or checksum strings, this standard specifies the conformance requirements. The check code system specified in this standard can detect the following errors: All single character substitution errors (that is, a single character is replaced by another character, such as 1234 is wrongly recorded as 4234); all or almost all single character swaps Errors (that is, the positions of two adjacent characters or two single characters that are one character apart, such as 12345 is misrecorded as 12354 or 12543); all or almost all displacement errors (that is, the entire string is shifted to the left or Shift to the right, such as 123 is entered as 123): Most of the double substitution errors (that is, in the same string, two separate single character swap errors, such as 1234567 is entered as 7234587); most of the others mistake. This standard does not apply to specially designed specialized systems, such as: systems that can both detect errors and correct them automatically; systems that check for errors that are deliberately falsified; systems that check character strings that are only exchanged between computers. This standard is used for information exchange between organizations and is also a powerful tool for information exchange within internal information systems.
