This standard specifies five commonly used methods for determining the water absorption of samples soaked in water at a specified temperature or placed in air with a relative humidity of 50% for a certain period of time. Two of these methods are used when the possible presence of water-soluble substances needs to be considered. The five methods specified in this standard are applicable to all plastics, except microporous plastics and plastics that soften to completely lose their original shape at boiling water temperature, which are only applicable to the method of testing at 23 °C. The standard soaking time is: 24 hours in 23°C water, 30 minutes in boiling water. A longer test time may be adopted upon agreement of the parties concerned. Note 1: In addition to the quality changes stated in this national standard, the influence of water absorption on other properties of plastics should be determined according to GB/T11547-1989.
