This standard specifies the measurement of alkalinity by the titrimetric method. This method targets natural water, treated water and wastewater and can be applied directly to water with alkalinity up to 20 mmol/l. In the case of a sample with a concentration higher than this, a smaller amount of sample is used for analysis. The recommended lower limit is 0.4 mmol/l. The presence of suspended solids in the form of carbonates can interfere with the analysis and can be filtered before titration to reduce interference. Using a pH meter for endpoint detection tends to result in fewer interferences than indicator methods.
