Scope
This International Standard specifies a variable-length format for expressing latitude, longitude and elevation in data exchange. The expression of elevation is optional, whether or not the elevation item is included in the format. This standard allows the use of both traditional sexagesimal notation including degrees, minutes and seconds, as well as various combinations of sexagesimal and decimal notations, including: degrees and decimal fractional degrees; degrees, minutes and decimal fractional minutes; degrees, minutes, seconds and Decimal fractional seconds. This standard uses the numeral symbols 0 to 9, and the written symbols plus and minus sign (+), minus sign (-), decimal point (.) and comma (,). This standard does not specify the use of fixed-length field formats, although they may be consistent with the data format of this standard, and the fixed-length field formats need to be agreed in advance by both parties of the data exchange. The implementation of this International Standard does not require special internal procedures, document organization techniques, storage media, programming languages, etc.
