This standard specifies the method for measuring the melting temperature range of precious metals and their alloys using differential thermal analyzer (DTA) or differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). This standard applies to the determination of the solidus temperature and liquidus temperature of noble metals and their alloys that exhibit a "consistent melting process" at the beginning of melting. This standard is also applicable to the determination of the liquidus temperature of other types of precious metal alloys, the corresponding characteristic temperature of other types of metal alloys, and the solid phase transition temperature that can present obvious peak shapes. The test temperature range of this standard depends on the instrument used, usually from temperature to 1500 °C.
