- Scope
- The purpose of this measurement is to determine the dependence of the return loss of a single-mode fiber optic device on the state of polarization (SOP) of light passing through the device. Return loss is the absolute value of the ratio of the total reflected power to the incident power from an optical fiber line or system, expressed in dB. Since the optical polarization state of the device is usually indeterminate and in fact varies with time, devices with polarization dependence will produce varying return loss in the system. This method can be applied to any single-mode fiber optic passive components and interconnects including attenuators, isolators, couplers, switches, connectors and splices.
