This standard specifies the procedure for determining the amount of esterified acid (including the content of free acids and anhydrides in the paint base) in bases for paints and varnishes by titration. Due to the different saponification resistance of different paint bases, this standard has limitations in applicability. If necessary, the experiment can be repeated under more severe conditions to test the complete saponification value, such as extending the saponification time, increasing the concentration of potassium hydroxide solution, or using an alcohol with a higher boiling point as the solvent. This standard does not apply to paint bases that may further react with alkali beyond normal saponification. Appendix A specifies the method for determining the saponification value of paint bases that are difficult to saponify.
